Occupation Times for Markov-Modulated Brownian Motion

We determine the distributions of occupation times of a Markov-modulated Brownian motion (MMBM) in separate intervals before a first passage time or an exit from an interval. They will be derived in terms of their Laplace transforms, distinguishing occupation times in different phases too. For MMBMs with strictly positive variation parameters we further propose scale functions.

Stopped Markov chains with stationary occupation times

Let E be a nite set equipped with a group G of bijective transformations and suppose that X is an irreducible Markov chain on E that is equivariant under the action of G. In particular, if E = G with the corresponding transformations being left or right multiplication, then X is a random walk on G. We show that when X is started at a xed point there is a stopping time U such that the distributi...

Occupation Times of Refracted Lévy Processes

A refracted Lévy process is a Lévy process whose dynamics change by subtracting off a fixed linear drift (of suitable size) whenever the aggregate process is above a pre-specified level. More precisely, whenever it exists, a refracted Lévy process is described by the unique strong solution to the stochastic differential equation dUt = −δ1{Ut>b}dt + dXt , t ≥ 0 where X = (Xt , t ≥ 0) is a Lévy p...

Extinction times in Multitype Markov Branching Processes

In this paper, a distributional approximation to the time to extinction in a subcritical continuous-time Markov branching process is derived. A limit theorem for this distribution is established and the error in the approximation is quantified. The accuracy of the approximation is illustrated in an epidemiological example. Since Markov branching processes serve as approximations to nonlinear ep...

Occupation in stressful times.

May/June 2002, Volume 56, Number 3 The events of September 11, 2001, have changed the world forever (Schuster et al., 2001). As occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants, we struggle to respond to both the tangible and intangible consequences of these events for ourselves, our clients, our families, our profession, and our society. I am sure that many of you have been confront...
